Several steps are involved in the extraction of tantalum from tantalite. First, the mineral is crushed and concentrated by gravity separation. This is generally carried out near the mine site. The refining of tantalum from its ores is one of the more demanding separation processes in industrial metallurgy. The chief problem is that tantalum ores contain significant amounts of niobium, which has chemical properties almost identical to those of Ta. A large number of procedures have been develope
Other tantalum-bearing minerals include ferrotantalite, manganotantalite and microlite. Tantalum and niobium are almost always found together, and are recovered from pegmatite veins in granite intrusions or from placer deposits. Tantalum is mined in Australia, Brazil, Canada and Central Africa.
The single largest operating tantalum mine is the Mibra operation of Companhia Industrial Fluminense in Nazareno. This mine has the capacity to produce 220 tonnes Ta 2 0 5 per year which equates to approximately 15% of current global primary production, although the latter are at historically relatively low levels. At 2007-2008 levels the Mibra mine accounted for 5-10% of global primary production.
Tantalite is named after its tantalum content, and, together with Columbite, are the most important minerals containing the rare element tantalum. The name Tantalite has been discredited by the IMA,with the more specific designations of Tantalite-(Fe) (also known as Ferrotantalite ), and Tantalite-(Mn) (also known as Manganotantalite ) being used for this mineral's IMA-accepted nomenclature.
AB Minerals is planning to construct several industrial scale plants to smelt Tantalite bearing ores and produce high purity Tantalum and Niobium. These will be the first plants of their kind in Tantalite producing countries.
The tantalum market is partly fragmented in nature, in terms of tantalum mining companies. The major companies include Global Advanced Metals Pty Ltd, AMG Advanced Metallurgical Group, Pilbara Minerals, Ningxia Orient Tantalum Co. Ltd, and Alliance Mineral Assets Limited.
The minerals involved include gold, tin, tungsten and tantalum, which are used to fund murderous militias caught up in a war between two peoples that has spilled over the borders from Congo’s

Industrial minerals are non-metal and non-fuel mineral resources including, for example, crushed rock, gravel, clays, sand (silica), gypsum, bentonite, and barite. They are the fundamental ingredients of roads and buildings, and they are essential for many industrial, commercial, and personal products and
Typical examples of industrial rocks and minerals are limestone, clays, sand, gravel, diatomite, kaolin, bentonite, silica, barite, gypsum, and talc. Some examples of applications for industrial minerals are construction, ceramics, paints, electronics, filtration,,,detergents and .
An obsolete group name for minerals with the general formula (Mn,Fe)(Ta,Nb) 2 O 6, equivalent to the Tantalite-(Fe)-Tantalite-(Mn) Series.Generally mangan-dominant s are more abundant in nature. Many specimens called tantalite actually belong to the columbite series or tapiolite series. Visit gemdat for gemological information about Tantalite.
Production by Lohja Minerals and later by Partek Industrial Minerals Oy from the Haapaluoma pegmatite in Seinäjoki, from 1962–1997, was ∼650,000 tons of feldspar + quartz ore (Puustinen, 2003). The Haapaluoma feldspar ore was famous for its high K 2 O (∼8 wt%) and low Fe 2 O 3 (∼0.04 wt%) content. Quartz was also obtained as a by-product.
Tantalum, an element of Group V, occurs as an intimate association with niobium in tantalite (Fe, Mn)(Nb,Ta)2O6. There is a continuous substitution of tantalum for niobium (solid solution), in that when niobium dominates over tantalum, then the name columbite is applied, and tantalite when greater amount of tantalum is present than niobium.
